SERPENTINE PAVILION 2019

The London cultural summer officially begins with the inauguration of the Serpentine Pavilion. The pavilion, a temporary structure annexed to the Serpentine Gallery in the heart of the Kensington Garden, is signed each year by a leading architect on the world scene. For 2019, the young Japanese designer Junia Ishigami, famous for his structures that use natural materials and reinterpret the archetypes of architecture, was called. Ishigami’s pavilion is inspired by the concept of a roof, the most popular architectural form in the world. It consists of a cover with an organic pattern, made with panels of slate resting on a light metal structure that acts as a support. Inside, the space is similar to a cave, a refuge for contemplation. Describing his design, Ishigami said: “My design for the Pavilion plays with our perspectives of the built environment against the backdrop of a natural landscape, emphasizing a natural and organic feel as though it had grown out of the lawn, resembling a hill made out of rocks. This is an attempt to supplement traditional architecture with modern methodologies and concepts, to create in this place an expanse of scenery like never seen before. Possessing the weighty presence of slate roofs seen around the world, and simultaneously appearing so light it could blow away in the breeze, the cluster of scattered rock levitates, like a billowing piece of fabric”.
